On the surface, a network name like "ChezMartinez" or "Riverside Apartments 4B" seems harmless. But strung together, the list of networks your device has connected to over the years is essentially a diary of your life: your home, your workplace or school, your gym, your favorite coffee shop, a friend's or partner's apartment, a hotel you stayed at, even a doctor's office.
Someone who captures your device's probe requests doesn't need to see you at all. They just need to be near you — in a mall, an airport, a parking lot — with a laptop and a cheap WiFi antenna. In seconds, they can pull a list of every network name your phone remembers, and that list is often a fingerprint unique to you.

How Attackers Turn Network Names Into Real-World Locations

Public WiFi mapping databases. Services exist — originally built for helping phones estimate location without GPS — that catalog millions of WiFi access points along with their GPS coordinates. Anyone can query these with a network name and often get back an exact address or neighborhood.
Wardriving. Hobbyists and attackers alike drive around cities with WiFi scanners running, logging every network name they detect along with GPS coordinates, building enormous searchable maps of "this network name = this street corner."
Common naming patterns. Many people name their home network after their address, apartment number, or last name — "SmithFamily2Ghz" or "MainSt_Apt3" practically hands over the location for free.
Cross-referencing. Even a "generic" network name can be pinpointed by combining it with other nearby networks detected at the same time. A unique combination of five or six network names seen together is often enough to fingerprint a location almost as precisely as a street address.
Put together, an attacker can take a raw list of probe requests and produce a timeline: home at night, office during the day, gym on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, a specific friend's apartment every other weekend. That's not hypothetical — it's a well-documented technique in security research, and unfortunately in real-world stalking cases too.
Practical Steps to Protect Yourself
The good news: this is a solvable problem, and you don't need to be a security expert to reduce your exposure.
Turn off WiFi when you're not using it, especially when you're out and about. If WiFi is off, your device generally stops broadcasting probe requests for remembered networks.
"Forget" networks you no longer use. Old hotel WiFi, an ex's apartment, a workplace you left — if it's still saved, it's still being broadcast. Clean out your saved network list every so often.
Turn on randomized MAC addresses, a setting available on modern iPhones and Android devices (usually under WiFi settings, per network). This makes it harder for the same device to be tracked over time and correlated across locations.
Avoid naming your home network after your address, name, or apartment number. A generic name that doesn't map to you personally removes one of the easiest links between a network name and your real identity.
